Well here she is. My second clandestine affair away from home (IT) is this lovely and not uncontroversial lady. She has the most gorgeously beautiful sculpt I've seen on a new doll in a while, called Kelly Woodsen.
I read that this doll is supposed to represent the Nenets people, who live in Arctic Russia. I read about them online and all I could think about was what Europeans did to the native Americans who lived in this country when they first arrived. There is oil underneath where the Nenets farm reindeer and live their lives, raise their children, build their homes. Getting that oil out of the ground beneath them destroys their fragile ecosystem, so... God help them! Kelly the doll is not representative of a Nenets woman at all, as the Nenets are Asian and have dark hair and eyes. But the pictures of their woven cloaks and winter gear on Wikipedia look pretty accurate to the clothes that she is wearing, their weaving is very intricate and detailed like her cloak, and some of the weaving patterns you can see appear to be accurate. I do love this doll, she's so pretty, but if any American dollmaker put forward a representation of the lovely Nenets people and she looked like this, it would probably find itself cancelled right quick!

As I promised in my first post about JHD dolls, I learned my lesson about their hair not needing any fixing when they arrive and left this Kelly-girl's hair as it was: two ram's horns and a ponytail. She also has a two-tone woven cord as a headband, which has two long dark brown strings that hang down about an inch and a half. Everything she's carrying practically has brown tiny strings hanging off of it, to represent all of that rope, chord, or piano wire that the Nenets must leave hanging off their clothes. Perhaps I'm supposed to tie the strings somewhere, but as yet I haven't attempted that. She is so pretty in her complexly woven cloak with the soft fur around the edges, an extremely nice quality garment.

This is a problem I sometimes struggle with when it comes to teeny tiny doll boots. And that problem is - how the hell can you tell if the foot is in there correctly?? Jamming it in does NOT work (trust me I have a friend) but gently working it in means that I'm constantly trying to tell when the boot stops and where the doll's toes will poke out strangely and make the boots look weird. I think Kelly's boots look ok though. I need see-through boots on my dolls.

As you can tell (well maybe you can't tell but they're not attached to the boots themselves) Kelly has some fur legwarmers above the top of her boots to keep her bare-ass knees warm. Ironically, she has nothing on her actual bare ass as in, no panties. In the Arctic? I hate it when dolls have no panties and short dresses, or actually any dress above ankle height and no underwear. I don't know why. It's like when people used to come into the room on TV shows in the last century and not close the door behind them - if I noticed it, it would take me a while to forget that the godamn door was open for the whole time Fonzy and Richie were having that private conversation in the Fonz' office that no one was supposed to overhear!
Anyway as you can see in the above photo the fur legwarmers have the brown chords hanging off of them too. Eventually I figured out to tie those chords around her legs and it looks neater. Whatever the hell the rest of the chords are for I still have not discovered - aesthetics, I think?

Underneath her luxurious cloak, Kelly is wearing a soft, textured dress that looks like it is made out of sweater. I've tried sweater dresses but they are just too hot for me. I guess in the Arctic you better wear that sweater dress (but don't forget your sweater panties). I really love this material and the way the sleeves are covering the tops of her hands, just the way sleeves in real life need to be - long, in the Arctic and everywhere for all people. I admit I was a bit taken aback by this sort of trapezoidal hemline at first, and I still am. But I like the dress anyway, it's so cute with the little turtleneck.

Kelly is my second JHD doll and I really like her. Her face, her cloak, another bangin' manicure from JHD (this time in brown/gray) I feel like once I put her away, I will appreciate her more because she is so detailed I'll always notice something new each time I see her. I'm a satisfied customer and I really like the lower price point. I think she's a great doll to add to any collection, just be aware (if you weren't as soon as you saw her) that the doll itself doesn't look like a real Nenets, and that she represents them in apparel only. She does a pretty good job with her ensemble, and that makes her a really unique doll in my eyes.
